Abstract:

Quinoline molecule is synthesized with the substituents at 2nd and 3rd positions, its Schiff bases are derived from 3-formyl-2-mercaptoquinoline and substituted anilines. The prepared Schiff bases have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H-NMR and mass studies. The compounds have been screened in vitro for antibacterial and antifungal activities by MIC methods. The results have indicated that the biological activity increases and bacterial activity is more as compared to the fungicidal activities. The brine shrimp bioassay was also carried out to study the in vitro cytotoxicity properties of the compounds. One compound has exhibited good activity against H37Rv strain. Only two compounds have exhibited potent cytotoxic activity against Artemia salina. Quinoline derivatives at these positions may be promising agents in future pharmacological and medicine applications.
